When we first began muling over ideas for Koots Salon, like what would it look like? What products did we want to use? And who would we appeal to? The answers were simple. We wanted a relaxing space, full off happy vibes where our clients could unwind and be pampered. You could say we wanted it to be a destination experience! As for the products, there was no question, they had to be cruelty free. There is no need for animal testing in this day and age so any companies still testing on animals were out! This was when we discovered Davines. After scratching the surface with this company and finding them to be deeply rooted in the idea of sustainability, with recycling high on the agenda, they now ticked all of the boxes.
“Beauty will save the world” -Davines- At Koots we are more than aware of the devastating effects plastic pollution is having on our beautiful world. Just last week, I walked my dogs to a small cove just behind Living Coasts and I couldn’t believe the amount of rubbish, mainly plastic, which was scattered across this otherwise pretty little beach. About a month ago another beach walk revealed a huge amount of plastic amongst the sea weed on Abbey Sands. This is becoming a more and more common theme, our beaches and oceans are turning into dumping grounds! Although World Earth Day began in America in 1970 and was thought of as being controversial and taking away from the civil-rights and women rights movements, it now has it’s own thunder, which is so relevant the world over. We cannot avoid the facts that plastic is becoming the No 1 pollutant of our environment, whether its being manufactured or destroyed, it pollutes our air, land and water. Plastic is full of carcinogens and does its damage over time. Even opening a bottle of mineral water in a plastic bottle releases this plastic pollution. The only way we can help to improve the damage being done is to start avoiding the use of plastic, especially the use of non food grade and non recyclable plastic. There is a school of thought that by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Now that thought doesn’t fit too well when booking the next beach holiday. Even Theresa May has tweeted about her support and backing of local community projects to clean up our beaches and seas. So many animals and sea life are getting caught up in the 8 million tonnes of plastic which is making it's way into our oceans every year and having devastating effects, with so many different species eating and getting caught up in and entangled in the litter. It may surprise some of you to know and others may have already spotted it but the ‘K’ in the Koots logo is sat inside a certain symbol………this is the Alchemical symbol for Earth. Earth being one of the 4 classical elements in Alchemy symbols. As you can see from the picture Scot already had these symbols tattooed, we added a 'K' and the Koots logo was born! For us at Koots this logo symbolises our commitment to our planet and sustaining it’s natural beauty. So in our contribution in assisting the efforts of cleaning up our beaches we are organising a beach clean… The place is Beacon Cove, behind Living Coasts The date - to be confirmed The time - to be confirmed We would like to invite anyone showing an interest and willing to help to come and join in with us. Don't forget we also offer a permanent 10% discount off product purchases upon the return of your empty Davines product containers which we will recycle for you. So get involved. If we all just do our little bit we can change this plastic future before we all become like the song ‘Plastic Man” by the Kinks. Don’t let us be plastic people!! Koots Salon Mission Statement To be self aware and enhance the lives of our clients and ourselves by understanding the importance of delivering a bespoke service that empowers and evokes confidence and freedom. A cruelty free salon aware of the worlds ecological movement, taking the responsibility of sustaining the planet seriously. All our products are responsible and so are we. We can’t save the planet from mankind on our own but together we can all contribute and ensure we deliver our finest work whilst leaving the planet and all it’s life and lustre as we found it. “Not just a salon, it’s a lifestyle” Oh and one last thing, so now we’ve explained the symbol, you’ll probably be wanting to know where the K comes from? Well that’s another story entirely……………….. By Melissa Hood Master Stylist Koots Tribe
